Native Plants for Small Spaces

Seattle-based boutique garden design studio transforming cozy urban spaces using Pacific Northwest and West Coast plants into thriving outdoor sanctuaries for both humans and local wildlife.

Why plant native plants?
“71% of the lower 48 states is privately owned. East of the Mississippi river, over 85% of all land is privately owned. If we planted native on 50% of this private land we would restore biodiversity…and we can do it starting NOW.”
– Doug Tallamy

Featured Garden:
San Dimas, CA
Installed October 2024
A California palette of soft chaparral plants hyper local to the Ventura Angeleno coastal hills where this San Dimas garden is located. Wildflowers take turns blooming nearly year round, from December to October.
Plants were chosen to be pollinator friendly in addition to being good cut flowers for arrangements and bouquets as the garden’s owner is a talented florist for weddings and events. Blue Grama, a low growing warm season grass works as a support and accent to the flowers. Client chose to self-install plants, so care was taken into creating a design that was easy to follow and maintain.

Installation by client. Dry river runs through the garden for rain collection and a mulch layer covers the soil to suppress weeds.

Planting Tips
Plant in cooler temps
Plant in the fall if possible, when the rains come back and before winter gets too cold. Planting is possible in the summer, but regular watering will be needed throughout the season. Make sure to water in evenings when temperatures are cool.
Plant in native soil
Just the regular soil in the ground is needed for native plants. No fertilizer or compost necessary! For container gardening, regular potting soil in pots is fine.
Plant with other natives
Plant with other sun-loving natives like California poppy, clarkia, and yarrow. The more native plants, the better for our wildlife! See Portland Plant List for other recommendations.
