Native Plants for Small Spaces

Seattle-based boutique garden design studio transforming cozy urban spaces using Pacific Northwest and West Coast plants into thriving outdoor sanctuaries for both humans and local wildlife.

Why plant native plants?
“71% of the lower 48 states is privately owned. East of the Mississippi river, over 85% of all land is privately owned. If we planted native on 50% of this private land we would restore biodiversity…and we can do it starting NOW.”
– Doug Tallamy

Better suited to climate resilience
Pearly Everlasting, anaphalis margaritacea
Sun loving and thrives in hot places like planting strips along the sidewalk! Our plants are pesticide free and homegrown in Seattle, WA, from an original plant from Oxbow Farms in Carnation.
Tiny pearl-like flowers
These grow in the summer. They make great cut flowers and long-lasting dried arrangements (see next photo). The flowers turn into fluffy seed heads that spread readily into new plants.
Pollinator-friendly plant
Provides nectar and pollen for many types of wild bees, butterflies, moths and flies. See Plants for Pollinators for more info

Planting Tips
Plant in cooler temps
Plant in the fall if possible, when the rains come back and before winter gets too cold. Planting is possible in the summer, but regular watering will be needed throughout the season. Make sure to water in evenings when temperatures are cool.
Plant in native soil
Just the regular soil in the ground is needed for native plants. No fertilizer or compost necessary! For container gardening, regular potting soil in pots is fine.
Plant with other natives
Plant with other sun-loving natives like California poppy, clarkia, and yarrow. The more native plants, the better for our wildlife! See Portland Plant List for other recommendations.
